Iowa City and the University of Iowa have hosted no shortage of major sporting events in 2026, which brings strong economic benefits to local businesses across our region.
Most notably, Kinnick Stadium welcomed the fan-favorite Savannah Bananas for two sold-out nights of Banana Ball this July. Our previous blog post, A Weekend That Was Bananas, showed that the event attracted more than 170,000 visitors to Kinnick Stadium alone. Looking at the weekend more broadly, Iowa City welcomed more than 262,000 visitors on July 3 and 4, representing an 87% increase over the city’s 2026 average of 140,000 visitors per weekend (Fridays and Saturdays).
The momentum continued this fall as Iowa City and the University of Iowa hosted two marquee football games at Kinnick Stadium against Iowa State University on September 12 and The Ohio State University on October 3. Adding to the excitement, ESPN’s College GameDay broadcast live from downtown Iowa City for the first time in more than 20 years ahead of the Hawkeyes’ matchup with Ohio State.
The week leading up to College GameDay brought even more national attention. Nike selected Iowa City for the launch of the first-ever Caitlin 1 signature shoe, which sold out within two hours of release. The launch transformed downtown into a three-day celebration featuring pop-up basketball courts, interactive exhibits, product showcases, and an appearance from Caitlin Clark.
Taken together, these events attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors to Iowa City, generating out-of-market spending, hotel stays, and national media exposure throughout Johnson County. But which weekends drew the largest crowds, and how many visitors traveled to the greater Iowa City area to be part of the excitement?

Cy-Hawk Matchup Brings the Most Visitors to Iowa City Since 2020
Surpassing visitation levels seen during the Savannah Bananas weekend, the Caitlin 1 launch, and College GameDay, the 2026 Cy-Hawk football game generated the busiest two-day period in Iowa City since the beginning of 2020.
On September 11 and 12, Iowa City welcomed more visitors than any other Friday-Saturday period over the past five and a half years with 275,000 out-of-market visitors. The game’s Saturday alone was the single busiest day for tourism in Iowa City during that timeframe, attracting more than 190,000 visitors.
Unsurprisingly, Ames was the leading origin zip code for visitors, with more than 10,500 fans making the trip to Iowa City. Cedar Rapids, Cedar Falls, Marion, and West Des Moines each contributed between 3,000 and 4,000 visitors on game day, highlighting the statewide appeal of the rivalry.

Nike and ESPN College GameDay Create Local Buzz
With appearances from Caitlin Clark, the ESPN College GameDay crew, and thousands of passionate Hawkeye fans, the weekend of October 2 and 3 delivered another memorable chapter for Iowa City tourism.
During the two-day period, Iowa City welcomed more than 208,000 visitors from 38 states. Approximately 174,000 visitors, or 70%, traveled from elsewhere in Iowa. Of those Iowa visitors, 137,000, or 85%, came from outside Johnson County.
While many headline events took place in downtown Iowa City, visitation was spread throughout the community. Roughly 104,000 visitors traveled downtown during the weekend, accounting for about half of all visitors to the area.
The impact of these events extends well beyond stadium gates and downtown stages. Visitors also supported local businesses throughout the community, with popular destinations including:
- Big Grove Brewery
- Wig and Pen Pizza Pub
- St. Burch Tavern
- TCB Pool Hall
- ReUnion Brewery (Iowa City)
As the Iowa City area’s profile continues to grow through sporting events, national media coverage, and recognized athletes, the entire community is seeing measurable benefits. From the Savannah Bananas and the Cy-Hawk rivalry to College GameDay and Caitlin Clark’s signature shoe launch, these events are bringing new visitors to the region, supporting local businesses, and showcasing Iowa City to audiences across the country.
