Iowa City Metro Youth Camps Guide

Posted June 4, 2025

Summer is here, and for parents with school-aged children, the break from school means finding childcare solutions for the next three months. For our area’s thousands of working parents with children in the household, finding the right solution is difficult if work schedules are inflexible. Many parents choose to enroll their children in summer camps as a viable solution when the school year has ended.

Johnson County parents have more than 60 camp options for their children to be a part of. The large, diverse offering of summer camps are a great way to fill the summer childcare gap while simultaneously providing kids with enriching experiences. They give children new experiences, offer structured indoor or outdoor activities, and provide them with fresh opportunities to build skills in specific interests such as arts and culture, sports, STEAM, and more.

While camps are an excellent option for children to get involved in each year, parents who have signed their kids up for camps in previous years know that discovering the right type of camp for their children’s particular interests can be more than challenging. Finding a well-fit camp for your child takes time, energy, and research, along with an organized planning process to ensure your child is signed up before the camp is full.

To assist parents in navigating the often unforeseen challenges that come with finding and registering for youth camps, one of this year’s Community Leadership Program groups created the Iowa City Metro Area Youth Camps Guide as their community project. This guide is designed to provide parents with a comprehensive, centralized resource for spring, summer, and winter break camps. It features detailed information on approximately 65 camps, organized by theme or location, allowing parents to easily compare the vast number of options available. The guide includes key details such as registration dates, costs, and helpful tips for the registration process.

The Iowa City Metro Area Youth Camps Guide organizes a list of suitable camp options for children in a single, navigable resource. Utilizing this guide helps families make timely and well-informed decisions for their children’s activities while not in school.

This project was completed on behalf of Greater Iowa City, Inc.’s Community Leadership Program (CLP). Created in 1990, Greater IC’s premier leadership program fosters informed, well-equipped, invested leaders. CLP is a year-long program, including 11 sessions on the various sectors of our community. Each year, the CLP cohort breaks into groups, and each group completes a project that is for the betterment of the Johnson County area.
