Greater Iowa City, Inc. (Greater IC) is opening a new grant opportunity, with funds received from Johnson County, designed to fund rural community branding and deliverables. This initiative aims to enhance the visual identity and cohesion of local communities through strategic branding projects.

“Branding plays a crucial role in rural communities by fostering a strong sense of identity and civic pride among residents,” explains Sarah Thompson, Greater IC Director of Rural Development. “It strategically highlights the unique strengths of a community, making it more attractive to visitors, potential residents, and new businesses.”

By attracting tourism, new residents, and key employers, effective branding directly influences the economic potential of a town. This impact is ultimately felt by residents and their quality of life. Additionally, it can enhance community cohesion by uniting residents around a shared vision and promoting a positive image both internally and externally. Overall, strong branding can be a powerful tool for rural communities to thrive and prosper, while maintaining their unique identity.

Any rural towns or districts in Johnson County, Iowa are eligible to receive up to $5,000. The grant opportunity is divided into two main categories to ensure comprehensive support and deliverables. The first category may include the creation of logos, brand guidelines, and other visual identity elements that define and promote the community’s unique character. The second category is a matching funds grant and includes funds specifically for deliverables, which could include downtown wayfinding signage, banners, murals, and business decals. Organizations are eligible to apply for both categories or select one.

To apply, communities must submit an application detailing their proposed projects. Applicants must form a temporary committee of at least three community representatives to guide the branding project. The temporary committee is required to include at least one city employee or elected official, in order to build on and align with existing city efforts.
