The Iowa Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) Survey is conducted through a partnership among the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA), local economic development organizations, and utility partners to better understand the needs, challenges, and growth plans of Iowa employers. Greater Iowa City, Inc. leads this effort in Johnson County by connecting area businesses with resources and programs while ensuring their operational needs are supported. Survey results help guide our advocacy, programming, and strategic initiatives.
In Q2 2026, Greater IC was one of 18 organizations statewide to submit BRE Survey results to the IEDA. Year to date, findings showed that 60% of surveyed Johnson County businesses plan to expand within the next three years, exceeding the statewide Q2 average of 46%. Businesses have also reported plans for more than $25 million in capital investment and the creation of approximately 1,200 jobs in the next three years, indicating private business growth across many sectors of business.
The survey also identifies challenges facing employers. For the first time since 2024, talent attraction initiatives emerged as the most frequently cited factor needed to improve regional competitiveness across the state of Iowa.
