Building an Aviation Workforce Hub in Eastern Iowa

Posted February 5, 2025

Eastern Iowa is quickly becoming a center for aviation workforce development, with The Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) leading the charge. In 2024, CID set a record for passenger traffic and is on track to surpass those numbers in 2025—proof of a strong regional economy and growing demand for air travel. At the same time, the airport’s strategic vision and leadership have driven new partnerships, educational programs, and infrastructure investments, ensuring Eastern Iowa is well-positioned to meet the industry’s workforce needs.

CID at the Center of Aviation Workforce Development

The demand for skilled aviation professionals is growing, and CID has taken a proactive role in addressing this challenge. Recognizing the need for a trained workforce, the airport has worked to bring key partners together, creating a pipeline of career opportunities in aviation.

One of the most significant outcomes of this effort is the partnership with Kirkwood Community College, which launched its Aviation Maintenance Technology program at CID last fall. By modifying an airport hangar into a dedicated training space, the program provides hands-on education in aircraft maintenance—an area of critical workforce need. Strong enrollment numbers and waiting lists highlight the program’s immediate success and the demand for skilled aviation technicians.

Building on that momentum, CID has also played a key role in bringing Coe College’s new flight school and aviation management program to the airport. Announced in May 2024, this program—developed in partnership with Revv Aviation—will provide students with the training needed to become professional pilots or enter aviation management careers.

These initiatives are not just independent efforts; they are part of a larger strategy led by CID to develop a comprehensive aviation workforce ecosystem. By positioning itself as more than just a transportation hub, CID is creating an environment where students, educators, and industry leaders can work together to build a strong, sustainable workforce.

Expanding Career Opportunities in Aviation

CID’s leadership extends beyond education—it is also driving new job opportunities through infrastructure development. A key example is the planned maintenance repair facility, known as “Track Seven.” This 40-acre site south of Wright Brothers Boulevard will be designed to house up to six Boeing 737s and serve both private and regional aircraft.

With maintenance repair facilities in the region booked out until 2030, CID saw an opportunity to meet industry demand while keeping aviation graduates in the region. The long-term vision is clear: students who train at Kirkwood and Coe will have direct pathways to high-quality jobs right at CID. This project is a prime example of how CID is aligning workforce development with economic opportunity, ensuring Eastern Iowa remains competitive in the aviation industry.

A Regional Asset Driving Economic Growth

CID’s role in the region extends beyond workforce development. Its record-breaking passenger growth reflects the strength of Eastern Iowa’s economy and the airport’s ability to attract airlines and investment. The ongoing $120 million terminal modernization project, set for completion in spring 2025, is another testament to CID’s forward-thinking approach. With expanded gates, additional jet bridges, improved seating and charging stations, and enhanced concessions, CID is investing in both passenger experience and operational efficiency.

To accommodate continued growth, CID is also executing a phased plan for parking and roadway improvements. These projects, which include an extended curbside drop-off area and a remote park-and-ride lot, demonstrate the airport’s commitment to long-term strategic planning.

Regional Collaboration & Legislative Support

CID has actively engaged with policymakers and business leaders to showcase its workforce initiatives, infrastructure investments, and economic impact. A recent legislative tour reinforced the airport’s leadership role in regional economic development and emphasized the importance of continued investment in aviation workforce initiatives.

The Future of Aviation in Eastern Iowa

CID’s ability to bring together education, industry, and economic development partners has positioned Eastern Iowa as an emerging leader in aviation workforce development. Through strategic planning, innovative partnerships, and major infrastructure investments, CID is not just keeping up with industry trends—it’s setting the pace for the future.

As these initiatives continue to take flight, Greater Iowa City, Inc. is proud to support and highlight CID’s leadership in workforce development. Eastern Iowa’s aviation industry is growing, and CID is at the heart of making it happen. Stay tuned for more updates as this workforce cluster continues to expand!
