A message from Greater Iowa City, Inc.’s President & CEO Nancy Bird

Posted June 24, 2026

Greater Iowa City, Inc.‘s hallmark is the collaborative nature and strength of our community and business leadership.  Data-driven and structured by four innovation councils, we are primed to tackle issues that you find most pressing.

As an organization, the end of the fiscal year is the time where our leadership transitions to an updated Executive Council and new Chair, progress letters are mailed out to investors and annual invoices are sent to your inboxes.  We want to genuinely thank all those investors who have contributed to our efforts.

This past year, we made significant progress leading several coalitions, including:

  • successful passage of the Local Option Sales Tax, helping reduce property tax pressure while generating $22 million annually for critical priorities like infrastructure, public facilities, and housing investments;

  • collaborating with business and community leaders that helped secure $416,000 in grants for 58 small, locally owned businesses and supported more than 160 technical assistance appointments through the Business Resource Center;

  • advancing Strategic Investment District plans along Cherry Street, 5th Street, and Sycamore that will support long-term community growth; and

  • helping operationalize the Childcare Wage Enhancement Program, increasing childcare slots by 30% and full-time staffing by 56%, among others.

We also start the new fiscal year by seeking fresh input on the economy from our members, or all the businesses and organizations in Johnson County.

We encourage you to take this 5-10 minute survey on:

  • Current business and economic conditions.
  • Awareness and perceptions of Greater Iowa City, Inc.
  • The effectiveness of our programs and initiatives.
  • The challenges organizations face in remaining competitive.
  • Future priorities for economic development and business support.

Your responses are confidential and will be reported in aggregate. The survey will remain open until July 30, 2026 and will help guide our work throughout the year.
